3 on 3 ball circulation

3 on 3 ball circulation

The game we are analysing today is a WSE Cup Men Final, the last of the final 4, featuring Igualada and Follonica from Spain and Italy, respectively. Notably, Igualada’s initial team is under 23.

As a reminder, follow these steps:

  1. Watch the video: Igualada vs Follonica (4-2) | HIGHLIGHTS FINAL WSE CUP
  2. Read and contemplate the analysis
  3. Match the analysis with the video, starting at minute 1:28.

Despite Igualada’s youth, they are a solid and respected team from every perspective of the game. That is why we analysed Igualada several times

Positional attack

Igualada is doing a 3 on 3 ball circulation, where the 4th player is in 0. As soon as the can they carry the ball towards 3 and they start playing from the side. This is 3 on 3 circulation is different from the most common ones. The reason is simple: they do not move the ball on the mid floor, actually they avoid the mid floor and the fourth player is in 0, in other words in their own floor. This is the opposite to the most common 3 on 3 circulations. Igualada´s players stop the game in specific zones such as 3. Where they know that they have advantage and are always facing the defender, and the other 2 players are still skating looking for the space. After every stop, Igualada players threaten the goalie. For two reasons being dangerous every time they control the ball and skate towards 4 or 7 to force the defender to follow them and change the skate orientation. Following accordion bases which we explained a few weeks ago.
