The game we are analysing today is the first game of five in the Lliga Portuguesa between Porto and Benfica. It ended 5-3 for Porto, marking their first win in the series.

This is our first analysis of a Portuguese game, and there’s a reason for it. Portuguese hockey is more “messy” compared to Spanish hockey when it comes to team tactics, making these games harder to understand. In this analysis, we have a good example of a bad decision and a correct fix for it.

The first thing we see in the clip is how R. Di Benedetto (Benfica Nº68) is being blocked. He is facing his defender, but he’s too close, making it easy for the defender to lounge and get the ball back. Here’s what happens next.

Transition

The defender, Ezequiel Mena (Porto Nº7), lounges at the perfect time, when Di Benedetto is too close to him. The ball bounces to the wall, with both defenders on either side of the ball and Di Benedetto in the middle. Mena gets the ball back, starting a rapid transition.
