As a reminder, follow these steps:
- Take a look at the video
- Read and think about the analysis.
- Match the analysis with the video. It starts at 3:18.
We are analysing the direct free shot, which means it is a bit shorter and requires more effort from the reader. I strongly recommend watching the video in slow motion to catch all the details, not only from Marti Gabarro (the floor player) but also from Marti Serra (the goalkeeper).
Positioning
Everything matters in direct free shots. It’s a game between the goalie and the floor player: how long it takes for the goalie to be ready, how the floor player “warms up” before the shot. The player's initial positioning is key for the first steps, such as deciding whether to shoot or if the dribbling comes from the backhand or forehand.
Moving the ball before a free direct shot can give some clues to the goalie. Use it in your own advantage
Sides
The first thing Gabarro does is choose a side and start from there. He sets some distance for two reasons: to create a better angle for himself and to make it harder for the goalie to cover the space.
