Cover the player not the space

Cover the player not the space

Today we are going back to the Okliga day 26 between Liceo and Voltrega . The game ended 5-3 for the locals. A lot of take-aways from Liceo. That is rare because Liceo has a more individualistic approach to the game than the teams I usually analyse.

Saying this, all Liceo’s plays and actions involving one or two players can be good to analyse.

So now, spread the roller hockey word

As a reminder, Follow this steps:

  1. Take a look at the video:
  2. Read and think about the analysis.
  3. Match the analysis and the video. Min 0:55

I'm not going too deep in the beginning. I like what they do but I’m not too sure if it is the best way to do it. It worked so there was nothing to say about it. Liceo finished the transition and then set the game on one side. When they get stuck, they change to the weak side. Moving all the attention to the opposite side. When that happened, Liceo stopped the ball at 3. Compressing the defence more.

Voltrega defenders close the opportunities from 7. So Liceo moves the ball back to 0 and then to the opposite side. Doing like a triangle shape. The one that stops the ball at the opposite side is Tato Ferrucio (Liceo Nº77).

Tato gets the ball. But first look at him, he stops the ball while he is moving. He is moving down the wall towards 7. Defenders are still covering the middle. The ball is faster than any player. At 7 on the same side Fabri Cioccale (Liceo Nº9) is located. He is looking to set a block for Tato.Fabri cuts in and Tato tries to go in as well, but Voltrega’s defender is doing a really good job. Being honest, both defenders are doing a good job. They managed to push the ball and Tato out of the box.

While this is happening. Look at the weak side. Jacobo Copa (Liceo Nº7) is getting a bit closer to the action, but keeping enough distance for having enough space. Copa’s defender is in the middle of the box. He is covering the space but Copa has 2 metres of advantage.

When Tato gets some space, Fabri is behind the cage. Which means one player less, and one defender less as well. And that is the time Copa shows up getting his defender’s back. Copa gets the ball really quick in a really tight space. Oriol Codony (Voltrega’s Goalkeeper) is already waiting for him. Copa managed to go over Codony and his defender. Scoring a goal after picking up a rebound and almost falling.
