Charapter II

Much of goalkeeping is in limiting opportunities for attacking players, the newer style of play enables a keeper to spend less energy on the simple parts of this desired result, covering a larger area of the cage and much of the ground that is hard for the old style. The energy invested in the more complex situations is very similar given either way of playing.

As in all aspects of the game positioning is king here, a properly positioned goalkeeper can use less energy and skill in any given situation than a poorly positioned goalkeeper. So proper awareness of where one is in the cage is a must, resetting between times of action is the best way to stay certain of your position at the start if a period of action but cannot ensure awareness in extended engagements, that takes practice and drilling.

No goalkeeper has full awareness of their positioning but the good ones can get close, creating the illusion can cripple the plans of the attackers.

The appearance of strength and strength are not so different, if you appear strong, players are less likely to shoot and will score less even if you are not strong in any given day. If you appear weak then players will have plenty of opportunity to score even if you are strong at the time.

Being strong is of course better than just the appearance but is not at its best if you do not also appear strong. Appearing weak encourages the opposition to shoot more and inspires confidence in them. Appearing strong and being strong together will inspire your team to play their best.

The thing I personally most wish to inspire in the opponent is despair.
