Understand the goalie
Last weekend was the European Championship final 8. I strongly recommend you to check it out. All the games. Sit down for a bit, yourself with some mates. Just 30 minutes of highlights. I’m only going to do this analysis from the final 8. I couldn't find any other goal that was easy to break down and understand. As simple as that
As a reminder, Follow this steps:
- Take a look at the video:
- Read and think about the analysis.
- Match the analysis and the video. Min 5:01
We are back at the direct free shot point. The main character today is the one and only Marti Casas, a Spanish player playing for Reus. A really nice guy, I had the chance to talk with him in Italy.
Get back to the important thing. Marti is a master of the direct free shots. He is a really complete player when talking about individual technique, good shot, good one on one. As usual, a fake shot to start. The reason forced the goalie to make the first decision, and a first step to lead the situation. A player like Marti is dangerous in both situations, the shot or the one on one. Not covering the shot option is not accepted.
The way to cover this as a goalie is by committing a step forward on the wall. As a goalie you need to find the sweet spot here, as far as you go, the more chances to stop the shot, but the harder to get the one on one.
If you know the reason behind it, you can play with it.
