Facing and spacing

OkLiga finals again. With every minute of any game. I'm watching the highlights and I can feel the tension between both teams. As we discussed before, in this game it is really hard to make the tactics the teams are used to. Different kinds of games. As it is not different this time, I want to focus on the one individual move that got my attention so hard.

As a reminder, Follow this steps:

  1. Take a look at the video:
  2. Read and think about the analysis.
  3. Match the analysis and the video. Min 1:08

Liceo is doing their game and Igualada is playing with an extra player, Les Comes. Les Comes is Igualada’s pavilion, which is an extra player. A lot of issues during this weekend, Igualada supporters harassing Liceo’s players and Liceo supporters, apparently. I was not there I cannot tell. But that is the level.

Liceo is being a bit more conservative, playing a 6.25 defence. This time Liceo is being really aggressive in the inner spaces. The clip starts with Matias Pascula (Igualada N4) skating towards 0, next to the wall. He is trying to open the defence. The accordion move, do you remember? Igualda is looking to free the spaces in 9. So far, the usual move.

When Matias hits the middle lane at 0, we can see two Igualada players, one of each side are almost on the half way line. Opening the space in 9, pushing their defender to the outer areas. And the 4th player is next to the goalkeeper, again making space in 9.This player is Marc Carol (Igualada N32). he is super smart. Using a deeper and dangerous position to drag the defender. His ultimate goal is to get the ball in 9. As free from defenders as possible. And it works.

When Matias sees the pass line, he quickly passes to Carol. Who stops the ball free. Here is the masterpiece, Carol is not facing Liceo’s goalcage, so when he stops the ball he is not full speed, he is skating but slowly. So when he gets the ball, he has enough space to turn and quickly faces the defender.

When Carol turns, the defender is still skating towards him, not ready for the one on one, and Carol has heaps of space, for the same reason. When Carol is facing the defender, straight does a one on one. And finishes in front of the goalie.
