Today this mistake has two faces. The bad thing is, this is a really common mistake. Even for professional players. But the good thing is that it has a really easy fix. Read until the end to see what happened.

The clip starts with a transition. This is the perfect example of a transition and not a counter attack. The goal of this transition is to start the positional attack not to finish on the goalcage straight away. Nil Roca (Benfica N24) skates with space from one side to the other. Roca passes to Ze Miranda (Benfica N3). Look at Ze Miranda, he is skating already and he is next to the wall. When Miranda gets the ball he keeps skating in the same direction. When this screen is happening, the other 2 Benfica players are moving towards the walls. Opening the space at 9 for Miranda and Roca. When the screen is happening, Miranda changes his speed and skates towards 9 on a diagonal trajectory. Still keeping the distance with the defender. When Miranda speeds up, Roca cuts in and Miranda filters the pass to Roca.
Roca gets the ball free from the defender in front of the goalkeeper. It looks like Roca has a lot of advantage, but is skating really fast indeed. Which makes everything a bit harder, especially in an area where you need to be precise. Also Roca’s defender is really close to him and the goalkeeper is getting some advantage. The defender manages to push Roca to the side.
Miranda cuts in after the passes, looking for the opposite side of Roca. the side where he is naturally going. It gets to a point where Roca is closed by the defender and the goalie, at that time, Miranda changes speed again to pick up the ball Roca just passes him. Miranda gets a lot of advantage on his position just with the speed change. 3 Sporting players finish the clip looking at Miranda while he is shooting at an empty goalcage. The biggest mistake here was the lack of communication. Roca’s defender and Xano worked really well together by pushing Roca away. While Miranda’s defender lost the attention and that is when Miranda got the advantage. You can even see the frustration on Xano when he saw the defenders way behind Miranda. If I had to point someone it wont be the goalie here.
